ING Banks on Windows 365 to Improve Management and Performance for a Remote Workforce

As explained in this case study ING replaced their on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) with Windows 365 Cloud PCs to meet the needs of employees wherever they work.

The bank can easily manage Cloud PCs with its existing IT team and reduce costs by eliminating 1,200 servers, helping to facilitate ING’s pathway to net zero carbon emissions and providing the bank with a model for a worldwide, cloud-powered future.

With 1,200 virtual servers (400 physical) running on-premises the VDI environment was costly to maintain. Scalability was also limited, since adding capacity meant building out physical infrastructure.

In addition, the solution required specialized management skills, which ING outsourced to a service provider. So, when ING kicked off a major digital transformation initiative in 2021, IT leadership decided to overhaul its virtual desktop environment too.

ING explored multiple endpoint options, including physical PCs, other VDI solutions, and Windows 365. ING was already using Microsoft 365, including management tools and Office applications.

ING decided to switch over completely to Windows 365 for several reasons: They knew it would be easy to deploy and manage with their existing team, the bank could also reduce their carbon footprint and cut costs by reducing IT time to manage their VDI environment and eliminating the need for 1,200 servers. Windows 365 would also provide a better user experience, especially with Microsoft Teams.

Using Microsoft Intune, the bank created a remote workplace management environment for efficient deployment, optimal control, and easy personalization. The IT team set up entities, management and support roles, groups, conventions, and everything it would need to onboard a diverse global workforce.

The cloud-based management strategy has enabled the bank to consolidate its operations while expanding possibilities. Eliminating 1,200 servers and outsourced management services has also resulted in considerable savings.
